WIESBADEN – Fallen trees and fences as well as a driver who lost control of his car because of a gust – the stormy weather left its mark in Hesse on Saturday. According to the police headquarters in the country, there was initially no evidence that people were injured. Also, no major damage to buildings or track systems was reported.
South Hesse seems to have been a bit more affected than the rest of the state. The most spectacular incident to date was reported on Autobahn 5 between Pfungstadt and Gernsheim. The driver of a car had lost control of his car due to a gust of wind, as the police in Darmstadt announced. As a result, the vehicle was thrown across the highway into the field. Neither the driver nor other road users were injured. Also, due to the strong gusts, trees had fallen and construction fences overturned.
It remained quieter in northern Hesse
The situation a little further north of the country was less dramatic. “We had about 20 missions in Frankfurt until the afternoon,” said a police spokesman. Branches fell from trees, and posters for local elections were blown over. All in all, the consequences of the stormy weather remained manageable.
According to the police, things looked similar in northern or eastern Hesse. Here, too, some branches had fallen on the streets by the afternoon and trees had been blown down, as the praesidia said. Initially, nothing was known about major damage or even injuries. “All in all, we are still in the green,” said a police spokeswoman in Fulda.
With a view to the weather, it is unlikely to be any quieter in Hesse on election Sunday. People are facing a rather humid day. As the German Weather Service (DWD) announced, thick clouds are likely to move over the country and showers must be expected. According to this, snow falls at high altitudes. Especially with heavy showers and thunderstorms in ridge areas, stormy gusts could blow.
