Motorist drives into a doner shop in Groningen

A man lost control of the wheel around 07:00 this morning and drove through the facade of a doner shop in Astraat in Groningen. Police say the driver was able to get out of the car on his own. No one was injured.

The car drove several meters into the building before coming to a stop, reports RTV North. The glass facade of the building has been destroyed. Company manager Sanni van Polen estimates the damage at 30,000 to 40,000 euros. “The entire facade has to be replaced. There is also damage inside; the wall has been hit and has to be plastered again.”

According to the manager, a cleaner was present at the time of the accident. “She learned everything about the collision. She was of course completely in shock.” A construction company makes a temporary facade, so that the business can open again as soon as possible.

Nitrous oxide

Police found two nitrous oxide bottles in the car. The man has been arrested and is being questioned. “We obviously want to know how this could have happened, but also whether the man transported the bottles correctly and whether he was under the influence himself,” the police said. The car was recovered by a tow truck.
