Motoring: New York E-Prix: Mortara and Buemi saved from the waters

What a race! And what a verdict! The first New York E-Prix – second race, Sunday – ended in terrible conditions, with the arrival of a violent downpour which caused numerous accidents, the pilots having become passengers of their car in aquaplaning. Leader of the championship, the Genevan Edoardo Mortara (Venturi), who had just touched the rail and who had lost his front wing, was finally ranked fifth, ahead of Sébastien Buemi (Nissan) who did not avoid the crowding. general, the first three of the race coming violently off the track. After presentation of the red flag and various discussions, the race direction finally decided to put an early end to the event, the classification taking into account the positions in the lap which preceded the massacre.

This New York E-Prix was one of surprises from qualifying. Mortara beaten by 8 thousandths by Buemi (5th on the grid) in his qualifying group only started from ninth place, his runner-up in the championship, the Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne was even worse off (16th), before being the victim of a touchdown from the first meters of the race. While Buemi was going to occupy third place for a long time, Mortara came back from behind to finally retain his leadership in the championship, now facing the Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne (Mercedes). Before Sunday’s race, the Genevan is 12 points ahead of Vandoorne and now 21 over Vergne. Buemi – best result of the season, in Formula E – is fourteenth in the world championship.
