Motorhome competition on Facebook – beware of fraud

The claim

On Facebook, motorhomes are raffled off or given away because of small scratches.

Our conclusion

These raffles are dubious. They are a scam in which participants’ personal data is collected and possibly resold.

    • Frequency of such offers: Many similar competitions on Facebook, mostly in travel or local groups, are fraudulent.
    • Uniform description texts: The description texts are identical, only the name of the Facebook page changes, which indicates a coordinated scam.
    • Google search for warnings: Numerous warnings and fact checks about these fraudulent campaigns are available online.
    • Missing imprint: The sites in question do not have a legally required imprint, which is a clear indication of dubious intentions.
    • Number of followers: The pages have only a few followers and no clear information about the organizer of the competition.
    • Warnings from consumer advocates and police: Officials strongly advise against disclosing personal data in such competitions.

Evaluation: The claim that the raffle is legitimate can be clearly denied. There are several signs that it is a fraudulent campaign.

On Facebook, tempting offers regularly appear in which supposedly high-value prizes such as mobile homes are raffled off or given away. The most recent case is the page “Mobile homes and campers”, which is giving away five mobile homes – supposedly because of small scratches. But is this campaign really legitimate? On closer inspection, it is a scam to obtain personal data.

Rumors/claims

This time, the Facebook page “Mobile homes and campers” is pretending to be giving away five mobile homes because they have small scratches. Users only have to comment “Congratulations” to take part in the prize draw. The offer seems to be a bargain for bargain hunters. (We have already reported on this scam HERE.)

Facts about the alleged gift

  • Frequency of such offers: There are many similar competitions on Facebook (think “E-Bike”) posted in travel or local groups. Usually, separate pages are set up for them to give the impression of an official offer.
  • Uniform description text: The text of the offer description is almost always the same, only the name of the Facebook page may change. Not in this case. The new page was created on July 22, 2024, the previous page on March 30, 2024. This is a strong indication that this is a coordinated scam.
  • Google search for warnings: A simple Google search for the description text provides numerous warnings and fact checks on this topic.
  • Missing imprint: The Facebook page on which the current competition is offered was only set up on July 22, 2024. It lacks legally required information such as an imprint with postal address and contact options, which are mandatory for commercially used pages.

  • Number of followers: The page in question has no followers as of August 6, 2024
  • Warnings from consumer advocates and police: Consumer protection agencies and the police strongly advise against disclosing personal data in such dubious competitions. This data can be sold or misused for other fraudulent purposes.

Further information and self-test

These fraudulent websites often use eye-catching images and enticing text to attract as many users as possible. Once users reveal their email address or other personal information, they run the risk of becoming victims of identity theft or spam. They are also sometimes asked to click on links that lead to phishing websites.

This scam is not new and occurs again and again on social networks. The scammers exploit the gullibility of users and play on the hope of a big win. There is no direct cost for participation, but the potential consequences can be significant if personal data falls into the wrong hands.

Conclusion

The alleged RV raffles on Facebook are dubious. They are scams in which participants’ personal data is collected and possibly resold. Users should always be skeptical and not disclose personal information if the offer seems too good to be true. The long-term significance of such scams lies in the increasing need for users to remain critical and vigilant about social media offerings.
