According to initial findings, the 49-year-old motorcyclist from the Principality of Liechtenstein, who lives in Austria, was driving with his 53-year-old wife on the Oberalpstrasse from Disentis/Mustér towards Flims shortly after 4:45 p.m., as the Graubünden cantonal police announced on Saturday.
At the same time, a 31-year-old German driver living in the canton of Graubünden drove from Flims onto the single-lane stretch of the main road to turn left. She failed to see the oncoming motorcycle and a violent head-on collision occurred. This was followed by a subsequent collision between the motorcycle and a car parked at the junction, it was further reported.
According to the statement, the motorcyclist succumbed to his serious injuries at the scene of the accident. The pillion passenger was flown to the Graubünden Cantonal Hospital in Chur by Rega with moderate injuries. The slightly injured driver was taken to the Surselva Regional Hospital by the Surselva rescue service. The three occupants of the car from the subsequent collision remained uninjured, it was further reported.
The Oberalpstrasse was completely closed for one hour in the area of the accident due to rescue and recovery work, and there were major traffic jams.
Together with the Graubünden public prosecutor’s office, the Graubünden cantonal police are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident.
