Motorcycle World Championship: Grand Prix of Thailand canceled

MotoGP will not be visiting Thailand this year. World motorcycle association FIM and MotoGP rights holder Dorna confirmed on July 21, 2021 that the racing weekend on the circuit in Buriram had to be canceled. The reason for this is the coronavirus pandemic and the restrictions that come with it.

Despite the best possible efforts of all parties involved, the pandemic “forced the event to be canceled,” a statement said. So far, no replacement Grand Prix has been set for Thailand. The MotoGP officials announced, however, that a replacement event “is under consideration”.

Motorcycle World Cup: The racing calendar has to be adjusted due to the corona

The racing calendar for the motorcycle world championship has been adjusted again on June 23, 2021 due to corona. The world motorcycle association FIM and MotoGP rights holder Dorna confirmed that the Japanese Grand Prix in Motegi cannot take place this year. The reason given was the travel restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic, which make implementation impossible.

For Motegi, the Grand Prix in Austin / Texas moves into the calendar and takes over the vacated space at the beginning of October. The Thai Grand Prix in Buriram will take place a week later than planned as a result of the calendar update.

Last weekend, the motorcycle world championship took place at the Sachsenring. It was the eighth race weekend of the current season. According to the current status, 19 events are planned. The season finale is scheduled to take place in Valencia, Spain, in mid-November.

Because of Corona: Grand Prix in Austin and Rio Hondo postponed

Because of the corona pandemic, the world motorcycle association FIM and the MotoGP rights holder Dorna have adjusted the calendar for the 2021 motorcycle world championship season. The organizers announced that the overseas races in Austin (USA) and Termas de Rio Hondo (Argentina) will be postponed indefinitely.

The gap will be closed by a second race in Losail in Qatar (April 4) and an additional Grand Prix event in Portimao in Portugal (April 18). The MotoGP calendar therefore still consists of 19 confirmed race weekends. The season starts on March 28th in Qatar and is slated to end on November 14th in Valencia.

Should the corona situation improve, Austin or Termas de Rio Honda could return to the calendar. The FIM has stipulated that a maximum of 20 races will be held this year.
