“Motorcycle Sales in Indonesia Drop in April 2023 but Exports Increase”

Jakarta

Motorcycle sales in Indonesia during April 2023 dropped dramatically compared to the previous month. However, sales to foreign countries or exports have actually increased.

According to the latest data announced by the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI), as quoted on Thursday (11/5), only 354,323 motorcycle units were sold domestically during April 2023. The nominal value decreased by 44.04 percent compared to March which reached 633,155 units.

This record is the worst score so far this year. In fact, the last time motorcycle sales in Indonesia were below 400 thousand units was in July 2022. Not only that, when compared to the same period last year, April 2023 sales fell 19.38 percent.

As for its segmentation, automatic scooters still dominate sales of two wheels this year with a composition of 90.2 percent. Then followed the duck motorbike with a record of 5.12 percent and motor sport 4.86 percent.

If accumulated during the first four months of this year, there have been 2.53 million motorcycle units sold in Indonesia. This number is actually quite good compared to the first four months of last year or the year before.

AISI itself targets a minimum of 5.4 million motorcycle units sold this year. That’s a sign, sales in the first four months almost reached half of the set target.

Interestingly, even though domestic motorcycle sales during April 2023 dropped dramatically, export sales actually increased. According to the same data, there were 41,201 two-wheeled vehicles sent overseas during the last month. This record surpasses the previous month which was only 36,962 units.

Meanwhile, the composition is still held by automatic scooters with a contribution of 54.22 percent, followed by sports motorbikes with 25.01 percent and scooters with 20.76 percent.

Unfortunately, the export achievement throughout April 2023 was not as good as the same period last year. Because, in April 2022, there were 58,793 motorcycle units sent abroad.
