mobility restrictions

As of January 1, 2023, all Spanish municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants are obliged to establish Low Emission Zones in which motorcycles over 20 years old and the most polluting vehicles may not enter.

The new one Climate Change and Energy Transition Law It is already underway and since January 1st the norm that obliges cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants to establish in their urban centers Low Emission Zones (LEZ) in which access to the most polluting vehicles is limited.

As you surely know, the polluting level of vehicles is classified according to certain environmental labels. In cities like Madrid and Barcelona there have been ZBEs for a long time and they take into account the environmental label of each vehicle to allow or not its circulation. And that now comes to a total of 149 Spanish municipalitieswhich are all those with a population of more than 50,000 inhabitants.

Older motorcycles are directly affected by this classification of environmental labels, since Those motorcycles that, due to age, do not correspond to any of the established labels, by default will not be able to circulate in those ZBE. And what motorcycles are those? Those motorcycles prior to 2003. If you want to know yours, Here you can check what label your motorcycle has. But to give you an idea, things go like this:

  • no label: Euro 1, registered before 2003.
  • B: Euro 2, registered from 2003.
  • C: Euro 3, Euro 4 and Euro 5, registered from 2007.
  • Zero emissions: Electric motorcycles and mopeds.

Each municipality of the 149 involved must establish their own limitations and regulations, but we start from the basis that if you don’t have a label, you won’t enter. And if you do, you will be fined with a penalty of 200 euros. The measure is already published in the BOE and we explain it to you in detail in this article on how motorcycles over 20 years old are prohibited in the center of cities.
