With the small two-cylinder, Fiat wanted to show that it was serious about reducing consumption and emissions. In some specifications, the engine reached a table consumption of 3.8 l per 100 km, which meant emissions below 100 g/km CO2. And as you know, in many western countries this has put small fiats in the lowest tax brackets.
However, the reality was completely different. Although the engine had a low table consumption, it often showed 50% worse values in operation. Even from our tests, we remember that driving under 5.5 liters per 100 km required quite a bit of effort. In a relatively heavy car, the small two-cylinder simply broke down and the driver had to constantly stand on his neck so as not to delay the others. In addition, the appearance of the engine with an unpleasant hum at low revs called for keeping the unit at higher revs, when it has a nicer sound after all. And that didn’t help consumption much either.
