The organizers of the motorcycle world championship hope for a season start at the end of July. “Where and when we still have to decide,” said managing director of rights holder Dorna Sports, Carmelo Ezpeleta, in an interview on the MotoGP website on Wednesday. But it was certain that the World Cup would start in Europe, said the Spaniard.

For the time being, races are scheduled to take place from the end of July to November. However, should the Grand Prix be possible outside of Europe, the season will go beyond November, explained Ezpeleta. It was only on Wednesday that the World Cup and its premier class MotoGP had to cancel three further Grand Prix due to the coronavirus pandemic – those in Germany, the Netherlands and Finland.

The current calendar would include ten races, four in Spain, two in Italy and one each in Austria, the Czech Republic, Great Britain and France. But it should still be adapted.

The first race would be the Czech Grand Prix in Brno (August 9). A week later, the Austrian Grand Prix was to follow at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. The start of the Formula 1 season is already planned for July 5, provided that the organizer’s plans can be reconciled with the federal government’s guidelines for the corona crisis.

In the Motorcycle World Championship, those responsible want to start at least ten to twelve races, even if trips outside Europe are not possible. The possibility of several Grand Prix on the same route will also be examined. This concept is already being pursued in Formula 1 – possibly with a premiere in Spielberg.
