MotoGP hopes to present calendar next week

A MotoGP world championship resume schedule is expected to be announced next week with the goal of resuming racing in July.

“We hope to present our schedule next week,” said Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna, the championship promoter, in a video posted on the official MotoGP website on Wednesday.

“If all goes well, we will start on July 19 in Jerez and the last races will take place in November, from 12 to 13 races,” he added.

Dorna asked the Spanish government for permission to organize two closed-door races on July 19 and 26 at the Jerez circuit (Andalusia) but has not yet received the green light.

The MotoGP championship should in principle have started on 8 March in Qatar, but only the Moto2 and Moto3 events could have been organized before the containment measures imposed to fight against the coronavirus pandemic. Several races have been postponed and so far 7 have been canceled.

“For the non-European races which have not been canceled, ie Thailand, Malaysia, the United States and Argentina, we have a deadline at the end of July to say whether we continue or not “, said the CEO of Dorna.

“After the first two races, we will see if the calendar is made up of 12, 13 or more events with a maximum of 16”, detailed Mr. Ezpeleta adding that a strict health protocol had been implemented in the prospect of resumption of the championship.
