Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is pessimistic about the world’s efforts to prevent climate change. This view was conveyed by Jokowi when opening the 144th Inter-Parliamentary Union Forum (IPU) which was held in Bali, Sunday (20/3/2022). Jokowi immediately left for Bali after attending the MotoGP celebration.
In front of the leaders of the world’s parliaments, Jokowi said the energy transition is something that is easy to talk about but difficult to put into practice. This difficulty is especially felt by developing countries.
“So what needs to be discussed is, and mobilized, is climate finance. This must be resolved immediately. Second, investment in the framework of renewable energy. Third, related to technology transfer. If this is not done in real time, I am pessimistic that climate change really cannot be prevented,” said Jokowi.
He said terrible things could happen if the world failed and did not dare to mobilize policies to prevent climate change. Therefore, Jokowi asks all countries that are members of the IPU to take action to prevent this from happening.
Jokowi also said that currently Indonesia has a lot of potential for new and renewable energy. Potency hydro power for example, it is claimed to be large because Indonesia has 4,400 rivers. He also mentioned that the potential for renewable energy from geothermal energy reaches 29 thousand Mega Watts.
In addition, Jokowi mentioned that Indonesia’s renewable energy potential includes wind, undersea currents, and solar energy.
“But we need big investments and technology transfers, global climate finance that is really seriously supported by the international community. If this is only discussed and there is no mobilization and decision, I am pessimistic that climate change really cannot be prevented at all,” he said.
“I really appreciate if all parliaments in IPU member countries can mobilize together with the government so that decisions, actions, which are really real and concrete can be implemented in the field,” said Jokowi closing the speech.
