The motive for the attack is still unclear
The Gera public prosecutor’s office, “Organized Crime” department, brought charges at the beginning of 2018, and the proceedings lasted several months. In May 2019, six men were sentenced to prison and suspended sentences for breach of the peace. The verdict states that the motive for the attack could not be clarified. During the trial, no one confirmed the police’s suspicion that these were disputes in the Armenian mafia milieu.
The convicted men appealed, and in May 2021 the Federal Court of Justice overturned the convictions against two men. The proceedings went back to the Erfurt regional court. And it lay there longer. On the one hand, because the criminal chambers have to hear so many detention cases – on the other hand, because the courts were only able to hear very limited cases during the Corona lockdown. Since this year there has been a new criminal chamber at the Erfurt regional court, which took over the proceedings and also set a trial date for March.
The presiding judge said the delay was bitter for the public prosecutor. The Gera public prosecutor in charge asked questions seven times. “Status inquiry” is the correct word. For the defendants, the delay – at least as far as the level of punishment is concerned – is a blessing.
