‘Mothers pay me to make smoothies and pills from their placenta’

A self-proclaimed ‘placenta specialist’ turns women’s afterbirths into a smoothie.

Virginia Maddock, a Sydney nutritionist, inflates the organ with almond milk, frozen fruit, matcha powder and ground flaxseed to make the drink.

She told 7Life: “Some moms take in a lot more energy [from consuming the placenta]almost like they’ve had an espresso.

“It can also help improve your mood and ward off postpartum blues and balance hormones.”

The mother of two also makes several other products using the placenta – and has worked with over 400 women.

She has used it to infuse vodka and added it to capsules that can be consumed by mothers.

While this may seem like a barmy concept, celebrities like Kim Kardashian have promoted placenta pills in the past.

Virginia said, “I definitely saw a huge boost in business after that.”

She also doesn’t just use placentas for consumption.

The businesswoman celebrates the fetal organ by turning it into works of art.

If I press the placenta against a canvas, she can give them a print to keep in the house or hang.

Although placenta consumption is more mainstream these days, some medical experts have warned against it.

dr. Sarah Tedjasukmana told 7News: “Women have ingested placentas in various forms for centuries.

Claimed benefits include physical, such as replenishing iron levels, and psychological, such as reducing the risk of postpartum depression.

“Unfortunately, there is no scientific evidence of benefit. Conversely, there are indications of risk.

“The encapsulation process is unregulated and mothers are at risk of bacterial or viral infection, along with problems such as too much hormone concentrated in the placental tissue.

“These can also cause problems for the baby if he is breastfed. My advice would be not to risk it.”
