“Mother’s kidney donation saves daughter’s life in emotional discharge from hospital”

In an emotional presentation, the Ramiro Prialé Prialé National Hospital of the Social Health Security (EsSalud) in Huancayo discharged the patient Sayuri Mueras Ticllacuri, a 19-year-old nursing student who received a kidney transplant thanks to the donation of his mother, Eva Maria Ticllacuri Quispe.

In an act of selflessness and love, Eva María, a 40-year-old farmer, donated one of her kidneys to her daughter, who had been diagnosed with chronic renal failure for several years.

The manager of the Junín de EsSalud Assistance Network, Gustavo Villafuerte Montes, reported that a team of more than 50 professionals from the Organ Transplant Unit, led by Félix Ortega Álvarez, participated in the intervention.

“First of all, renal ablation was performed by laparoscopic nephrectomy of the donor; while in the other room the recipient was prepared for the recently extracted kidney implant. In a short time, the transplanted patient achieved a favorable evolution, which contributed to a rapid recovery”he pointed.

Ortega commented that the operation lasted more than nine hours and was carried out simultaneously in two operating rooms and stressed that the Ramiro Prialé Prialé National Hospital has carried out more than 50 successful kidney transplants since 2004.

A new chance at life

Sayuri went to the Ramiro Prialé Prialé hospital once a month for her monthly check-ups and peritoneal dialysis treatment. After performing a series of tests, the specialists concluded that Mrs. Eva María was fit to donate one of her kidneys to her daughter.

“From the moment that possibility was proposed to me, I did not hesitate for a moment to say yes”she shared excitedly.

Sayuri, for her part, stated: “I know that all mothers do many things for their children, but she is unique. Thanks to her, for the second time, I have a new life. With this new opportunity I want to finish my degree and travel with my family”.

Peru has one of the lowest donation rates in Latin America: only two donors per million inhabitants. Nationwide, more than 6,000 patients are currently waiting for an organ or tissue donor.
