Motherland: A Nostalgic Drama of Post-Soviet Lithuania in the 90s

The film “Motherland” is a nostalgic drama that tells about the experiences of a twelve-year-old American teenager, Kova, when he first arrives in his mother’s homeland, Lithuania, shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In the memories of a mother who emigrated at a young age, it is a beautiful fairyland, but the post-Soviet reality is much harsher. Trying to recover the family’s beautiful property, it turns out that several poor families of relatives have settled there; hard decisions and difficult choices have to be made. In addition, corruption thrives in post-Soviet Lithuania, so the mother accepts the help of her ex-lover, who claims to have useful connections. But here, too, nothing is as it seems, and everyone has their own selfish interests. The film offers an opportunity to look into the events of the wild nineties right here in the neighborhood, and at the same time reminds us of our own experiences – because the peculiarities of the legacy of the Soviet era and the historical realities are quite similar to our neighbors. With the film “Motherland” the author and director of the script Toms Vengris makes his debut in the full-length cinema format. The main female role in the film is played by Severija Janushauskaite – Lithuanian theater and cinema actress, singer and composer. On the other hand, the music for the film was created by the Latvian composer Kārlis Auzāns.
