Principal Jang Guimei… Living in a school dormitory without a home
Despite being sick, dedication, salary, and prize money are poured into education.

Before starting school, Jang was an ordinary woman who worked as a teacher with her husband. The couple’s happiness was not very long. In 1996, when her husband suddenly died of stomach cancer, Jang was left alone. He continues to work as a teacher, and from 2001 he became the director of the Huaping County Children’s Welfare Center.

– As a director and teacher, one day he met a 13-year-old girl on the side of the road and had a big turning point in his life. The girl cried, “I want to study, I don’t want to marry.”

It turned out that the girl’s parents decided to receive 30,000 yuan (about 501 million won) in exchange for marrying the girl, and were forcing the child to quit school. The angry Jang went to the girl’s house and said, “I will take my child, I will pay the tuition.”

But the girl’s mother confronted her, saying that if Jang stopped getting married, she would die. In the end, Jang could not help the girl.

Jang recalled to the Xinhua News Agency that “I have never seen the girl again” and “regret it in my life.” Girls from poor families quit school even if they didn’t want to, and it was still the case in mountainous villages in China at the time.

– Zhang thinks of a girl and decides to set up a free high school. “All of the kids should have a fair starting line,” he said. “Some of them didn’t even have a chance to stand on the starting line.”

He collected money and received donations to open Huaping Girls’ High School in Lijiang City, Yunnan Province in 2008. In the first year of 2008, 100 girls were admitted. All tuition and dormitory fees were waived.

– It was an ambitious school, but there was a long way to go. It is said that some students who did not even step on the school threshold in the entrance exams taken at the time of school opening received 6 points on the mathematics test, which is a perfect score of 1.5 million.

Jang wakes up at 5 am every day with the goal of sending all students to college and falls asleep after midnight. The students studied hard to reward their sincerity, and as a result, this school is said to have a 100% college entrance rate every year since its opening.

Zhang’s only interest was students. Since he doesn’t have a home, Jang has been living in the school dormitory for 12 years from the time of opening to the present.

– He has been dubbed as’China’s Best Teacher’ and has spent 1 million yuan (160 million won) on student education, including most of the prize money, donations, and monthly salary he received.

If there is a house that doesn’t send children to school, I went to it. They visited homes on scooters, tractors, and even on horseback to persuade parents.

– I have devoted myself to teaching students despite suffering from 17 diseases, including emphysema and cerebellar atrophy.

According to media interviews, Jang is not feeling well lately and her body is getting weaker. It is said that it is not easy to climb the stairs. The intestinal weight has decreased from 65kg in the past to 40kg now. “I always count how much longer I can live with and how much longer I can get along with,” he said.

– On the 11th, China’s state-run CCTV broadcasted the program’Exemplary of the Era’, a program that introduced Zhang’s story, and graduates appeared to express gratitude to the teacher. Digital books were also published that document the stories of chapters and students.

Graduates are active in various professions such as police, lawyers, doctors, teachers, and university researchers. Together, they call Mr. Jang “Mother”. It is because it allows me to live a new life through school. Jang cried, “If the students live well and are happy, that’s enough.”

Among the graduates, many have become teachers to become’the second Jangguimei’. Zhou Yunli went to Huaping Girls’ High School with her real sister. After graduating from college, he became a middle school teacher, and when he heard that he was short of math teachers, he immediately ran to his alma mater.

In an interview with Xinhua News Agency, Zhou said, “I would have been nothing without school,” and “What Zhang taught us was that if we had strength, we should help others.”
