The facts took place sometime between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. 27-year-old Christiane K. had her five children – Luca (8), Timo (6), Sophie (3), Leonie (2) and Melina (1) – first sedated and then suffocated, according to the first results of the autopsy. At that moment the children were still in bed. “The breakfast bowls were still on the table,” said Marcel Maierhofer of the local police.

The mother tried to get out of life herself later in the day by jumping in front of a train, but survived. She is seriously injured in hospital and has been arrested by the police on suspicion of five-time murder. “She probably committed the facts because it had become too much for her emotionally,” said Maierhofer.

K. had been separated from the 28-year-old father of four of the children for a year. The family was known to the social services and the police. She confessed the facts in text messages to her mother. “Send the police to the apartment, the children are dead,” she sent, the police announced.

K.’s sixth child, eleven-year-old Marcel, was taken away from school by his mother on Thursday with an excuse. She took him to Dusseldorf and sent him from there independently to his grandmother in Mönchengladbach by train. When K. sent the text messages to her mother, the boy was on his way to her. At that point, the other five children were already dead. The boy could not be questioned yet, but he told friends at school what had happened. He stays with his grandmother.

Police added that the young woman is the only suspect. The three fathers of the six children would have nothing to do with the case.
