Mother on Trial for Deprivation of Care: A Son’s Life in Seclusion

This Thursday, October 5 in Rennes, the trial of a mother for deprivation of care begins. Her son had lived a total recluse since his birth. A year ago, during a visit to the emergency room, doctors found the boy far too thin, weighing only 27 kilos at 14 years old. He was also out of school. He has since been placed in a foster home. The defendant denies any mistreatment, so this Thursday’s hearing will be decisive.

For Stéphanie, this 50-year-old mother, her son is neither mistreated nor reclusive. She says that her child went to the library, the museum, the theater… A small frame, certainly slim, but who ate his fill. The mother denies any abuse and is impatiently awaiting this hearing to be able to explain herself. “We were a happy, free family. I tried to go in this direction and now everything is taken from us. I hope that justice will do its job well for my son, who has never stopped asking from the start for go back home,” she says.

If the mother, who raised her child alone, is acquitted, she can therefore make a request to regain custody of her son, placed with child welfare. For more than a year, she has only seen him twice a month, during appointments lasting barely an hour, where the mother and her son are accompanied by a social worker. On the other hand, if Stéphanie is deprived of her rights, she risks losing custody of the teenager and faces a maximum sentence of seven years in prison and a fine of 100,000 euros.
