NEW YORK – Authorities have charged with murder the mother of two boys, aged 11 months and 3 years, who died after being stabbed multiple times in their Bronx apartment Saturday night, New York City police said Monday morning. York City.
Dimone Fleming, 22, was charged with two counts of murder, two counts of willful manslaughter and two counts of depraved indifference to a person under the age of 11.
In addition, authorities released the identity of the victims, Octavius Fleming-Canada, 11 months, and Dashawn Fleming, 3 years old.
According to details provided by police and Deputy Chief Louis De Ceglie, the first emergency call was received at around 7.21pm regarding a woman who was behaving erratically and allegedly tried to burn objects inside the kitchen area.
When officers arrived at the scene, a family shelter located at 246 Echo Place in the Mount Hope neighborhood, they found Fleming naked, unarmed and behaving strangely but nonviolently on the third floor of the building, according to the preliminary details.
Uniforms took her into custody without incident and she was transported to Saint Barnabas hospital for a psychological evaluation, police said.
However, at approximately 7:57 pm, authorities received another call about two unresponsive minors in the building at the same address. Upon arrival, officers found an 11-month-old and a 3-year-old boy with multiple stab wounds to the neck and torso and attempted to rescue them, police said. Both victims were taken to NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center where they were pronounced dead, police added.
“This is an incredibly heartbreaking and shocking tragedy. We express our deepest condolences to all those affected and stand ready to provide whatever support they need during this incredibly difficult time,” a spokesperson for the City of New York City Department of Human Services (DDS) said in English. Authorities confirmed that an accident had been reported at the same location years ago, but did not provide further details. They also clarified that the father of the minors is not in custody.
The coroner will determine the cause of the babies’ deaths.
