Mother of MS Patient Shares Journey: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Support

Kadhija is the mother of a daughter with MS: ‘I didn’t want to know’ Also read

Future

She soon has an MRI scan and is definitively diagnosed with MS. “I really fell off my ladder for a moment. I was just thirty, I couldn’t climb the stairs or pick up the children. Especially the first few days I had a very difficult time and I had a lot of questions about my future.

Danique’s father also has MS and of course came straight to her to talk about the disease. “He is now 59 and was diagnosed at 32. Fortunately, the disease has been at a standstill for him for some time. I am really lucky to have him as an example, who helped me quickly turn my illness into something positive.”

Defense system

“You can grow old with it and also function well. I take medication every night to slow it down. This medicine ensures that I have few white blood cells, so that the immune system does not attack my myelin, which is around my nerves. My immune system actually works against the MS and attacks the nerves. If that happens, you will have a relapse and a relapse. Then we just have to wait and see how you recover.”

Danique suffered from her right leg after her first attack, which lasted weeks. “My leg tingles from nerve pain day and night. Sometimes I also get shocks through my arms. I was also extremely tired from the attack, but luckily that subsided. I can now work again and it no longer hinders my motherhood, for example.” She explains that MS can affect everyone differently.

Support and fear

My parents and husband in particular really got me through it in the beginning. Also, everyone around me now puts on the brakes when they see that I am taking on too much. Stress can really be a trigger and provoke a relapse. I’m not afraid every day that I’ll get one of those relapses again. However, they recently saw a new spot on a brain scan, which indicates that the MS is active.”

The bond that Danique now has with her father has become much stronger due to the illness. “He always says he’s not the right role model. He always works way too hard, but I see it differently. Through him I see that I can do this too. That I can also be happy and that I can also continue to work, for example. I have a stigma because of MS, but even if you get sick: for me it is not the end of the world.”
