Cindy K., the woman from Mechelen who was arrested at the end of last week after her 2-year-old son was found dead in a sweltering room of her apartment, will remain in jail for at least a month. The Mechelen council chamber decided that on Tuesday.

The law doctor’s investigation would show that the combination of malnutrition and dehydration is the cause of the death of the toddler. “My client insists that she gave her child enough food every day,” responded lawyer Karel Loncke after the courtroom.
“She’s having a really hard time in prison. She cannot say goodbye to her son with dignity. That is difficult for her. I hope she gets permission to attend her son’s funeral. In addition, she is terrified that this case will also prevent her from seeing her other child. ”
It is not yet known whether an appeal will be lodged against the extension of her arrest.
