The mother of a baby who was found dead in a pond in Doetinchem in 2006 will appear in court. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) reports this Omroep Gelderland.

The Public Prosecution Service suspects her of infanticide or manslaughter and suspects that she killed her child out of fear of the birth being discovered.

The baby was found lifeless in a pond by a group of children playing. They named the baby Sem Vijverberg. The police launched a major investigation, but for years it remained unclear who the boy was.

The case was in danger of being forgotten, but the 41-year-old woman was arrested in September 2022 after a tip. She stated that she could not remember being pregnant or giving birth. She was released later that month, but remained a suspect in the case. It is now clear that the woman must appear in court.

Research

After her release, the woman was examined by several experts. For example, a memory expert has examined whether such a ‘total loss of memory’ is possible. The Public Prosecution Service does not want to reveal the outcome of the investigations in the run-up to the case.

A search was also made for the boy’s biological father, but he was not found.

It is not yet clear when the woman will have to appear in court. The woman’s lawyer does not want to respond to the OM’s decision at Omroep Gelderland.
