Mother left poor family in Steenrijk, penniless: ‘Children saw it happen’

Niall and Patricia live a luxurious life with their two sons in a beautiful small town on the island of Gran Canaria in Spain. They have their own sales coaching company and a generous income. In Zoetermeer it is a different story. There, Sabine and her four young children have to make do with 110 euros a month. In the SBS program Very rich, dirt poor the viewer sees that Sabine is not well off in several areas.

The single mother lives in a flat with her four children. When Niall and Patricia see what they have to trade in their home in Gran Canaria for a week, they are shocked. Among other things, the sofa is broken and three children sleep on bunk beds in the same small room. “This is very intense,” said Neil when he saw the kitchen. “I’ve been living on my own since I was 15. I went back in time.”

A safe life

Although the house does not look attractive, they live safely. That was different before, Sabine’s father tells Neil and Patricia. Sabine was abused by her ex-husband. “He wanted to call the shots. He hit too,” he says. Sabine eventually had to go to a shelter run by Jouw van mijn Lijf. “The kids have experienced that. The two oldest in particular are still suffering from it. Those kids have seen it happen in front of them.”

Patricia becomes emotional when she hears the story. In the episode you can also see that a store worker has tears in her eyes because of the sad situation of Sabine and her children.
