Mother-in-law from hell: Scary trailer for the A24 psycho-horror “The Front Room” – from the author of “The Lighthouse” – Cinema News

The horror thriller “The Front Room”, which will soon be in cinemas, not only uses the cliché of the evil mother-in-law, it even takes it to its bloody and brutal extreme. Watch the trailer from “Hereditary” & “Midsommar” studio A24 here.

“The Front Room” is the first directorial work of twin brothers Max and Sam Eggers, who also wrote the script. The thriller, which builds in tension even in the trailer, is based on a short story by the popular British crime and horror author Susan Hill (“The Woman in Black”).

Max Eggers, at least, should already be known to fans of the “elevated horror” subject. In 2019, the New Yorker wrote the screenplay for the award-winning “The Lighthouse” together with the third Eggers brother, director Robert Eggers.

“The Front Room” will be released nationwide in German cinemas on September 5, 2024. That’s even one day earlier than in the USA.

In the lead role, you can expect Brandy Norwood, who was extremely successful as an R&B singer as a teenager in the 1990s under her first name. As an actress, you might know the Grammy winner from films such as the slasher horror hit “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” or the Christmas romcom “Best. Christmas. Ever!”, which was released on Netflix last winter.

In addition to Norwood, Neal Huff from “Waves” and Andrew Burnap (“Murder for God’s Sake”) also appeared in front of the camera for the Eggers twins. Burnap will play a major role in Disney’s live-action musical “Snow White” in 2025. The antagonist in “The Front Room” is Kathryn Hunter, Arabella Figg from “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.”

“The Front Room”: This is the story

Belinda (Norwood) and her husband (Burnap) have not been married for very long and are deeply in love when their doctor tells them that Belinda is pregnant. The expectant mother couldn’t be happier when she receives a call from her lover that really dampens her spirits: his father has died unexpectedly.

The two drive to the funeral and settle the dead man’s affairs with his pastor (Huff), which includes the reading of his last will. In it, the old man has decreed that Belinda and his son must let his stepmother Solange (Hunter), who lives in a nursing home and has been estranged from the family for years, move in with them.

The couple visits the frail-looking old woman, who promises to give them all her money if they take her in. While her husband hesitates, Belinda thinks about the mortgage on the house and the financial security of her child. So they take Solange with them. But she turns out to be a bossy, racist and completely selfish devil in no time. She also apparently plans to claim Belinda’s baby for herself as soon as it’s born…
