Van Brée has two older sons and a young daughter, Stella. “Stella is now 16 and had a tough childhood. She has a “tough character” and I have felt guilty about that for a long time. Last year I received confirmation that she also has an autism spectrum disorder. Through her I have seen how people who are a little different also think differently. And how difficult that is for them.”
Stella never knew Luna, but “has always been very involved,” says Van Brée. “Luna is my sister,” she keeps saying. “She was also very proud of me after seeing the documentary and is also interested in possibly talking to Hans Van Themsche one day.”
According to Van Brée, questions were asked and answered in the series that were not addressed during the process at the time. And she is grateful to the program makers, psychiatrist and researchers for that. “The series helped me, but I think Stella also got a lot of answers. And maybe others will get answers too.”
