The government has decided to take steps to import 200,000 tons of commercial rice. National Food Agency (Bapanas) chief Arief Prasetyo Adi said the imports were made after considering the state of the government’s rice reserves which were currently running low, so they needed to be added immediately to anticipate an emergency.
“These food reserves must be available and not freely distributed, only used for different government activities,” Arief said after the cabinet plenary meeting at the State Palace, Jakarta, quoted in his statement on Monday, December 6, 2022.
According to him, the imported rice stock is only used under certain conditions such as disaster management, price intervention if needed, and several other government activities.
