The UN Refugee Agency has surveyed 4,900 Ukrainian refugees who have currently found refuge in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. People were surveyed in May and June.
Currently, more than 5.6 million Ukrainian refugees are registered in Europe. Almost 8.8 million people left Ukraine since the beginning of the war, and 3.3 million of them have already returned to Ukraine.
“People are desperate to be reunited with their friends and family, and are worried about those who remain in Ukraine. Most want to wait until the fighting subsides to drive home,” the study says.
Of those who want to return, 40% plan to do so in the next month. Most of those who want to return to their homeland lived in Kyiv and western Ukraine until the war. People who come from the north and east of Ukraine are less likely to express a desire to return home.
