Most Magnificent Christmas Trees of 2021: From Paris to New York, Kyiv to Krakow

Despite the many crises that beset the world today, Christmas trees have appeared every year seemingly earlier as a tradition that has withstood wars, climate change, viruses and other threats. Villages and cities, including war-torn areas, manage to display huge, bright and creative Christmas trees to spread the positive spirit of the holiday.

The origins of Christmas trees can be traced back to the use of evergreen trees in Ancient Egypt and Rome to the German tradition of using candle-lit trees that came to America in the 19th century.

We have Germany to thank for the use of Christmas trees as we know them. Sources contain information about the 16th century, when devout Christians brought decorated Christmas trees into their homes.

The tradition of the Capitol Christmas tree, or “People’s Tree”, began in 1964, when the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, John McCormack, placed a live Christmas tree on the Capitol lawn. This Christmas tree lived for three years before being damaged by wind and root damage.

In 1970, the architect of the Capitol asked the US Forest Service to provide a Christmas tree. Since then, a different national forest has been chosen each year to host the People’s Tree, which includes a community engagement campaign to connect with and honor national forests.
