With eleven nominations, the film “Joker” is the big favorite in this year’s Oscar race. The dark comic thriller by director Todd Phillips has, among other things, chances of winning awards in the categories of best film, for director and leading actor Joaquin Phoenix.

There were ten nominations each for “The Irishman”, “1917” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”. These films are also nominated for best film in the main category.
In addition, the directors of these works have a chance of a directing Oscar: Todd Phillips (“Joker”), Martin Scorsese (“The Irishman”), Sam Mendes (“1917”) and Quentin Tarantino (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) . The Oscar Academy announced on Monday.

Brad Pitt and Laura Dern have a chance of winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Pitt was nominated for his role as a stuntman in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and Dern for her appearance as a divorce attorney in “Marriage Story”. In the men’s ranks, Pitt competes with, among others, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci from “The Irishman”. The five contenders for women also include Scarlett Johansson (“Jojo Rabbit”) and Margot Robbie (“Bombshell”).
The German co-production “The Cave” (German title “Die Höhle”) has a chance of an Oscar as best documentary. The work of Syrian director Feras Fayyad (“The Last Men of Aleppo”) is among the five contenders for the award.
At the Golden Globes, Sam Mendes’ war film “1917” was recently recognized as best film drama and Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” as best comedy.

No German work has been nominated for the best non-English language film this time. The drama “Systemsprenger” by Nora Fingscheidt had already fallen by the wayside in the pre-selection process in mid-December. The Oscars will be awarded for the 92nd time on February 9th.
