New Delhi: Indians are the largest expatriate population in the world, according to a UN report. There are 1.8 crore Indians living in different countries.
At the same time, the highest number of Indians live in the UAE (35 lakhs). The figures are in the International Migration 2020 report released yesterday by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
After India, Mexican and Russian citizens make up the largest expatriate population in the world (1.1 million each). One million Chinese and eight million Syrians live in various countries.
After the UAE, the US has the largest number of Indians (27 lakhs). Saudi Arabia is in third place with 25 lakh Indians. Other Indian-majority countries are Australia, Canada, Kuwait, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar and the United Kingdom.
28.1 crore (4%) of the world’s population are expatriates. 3.4 crore people had to leave their country due to war and riots. Europe has the largest expatriate population (8.7 million). North America is in second place (5.9 crores). The US (5.1 crore) is the largest expatriate country.
