Until now, there were two ways in which scientists mapped the anatomical structure of the brain. Dead brains donated to science were sliced and examined under the microscope to gain insight down to the cellular level. In addition, there are MRI scans, images of the brain that are also taken in the hospital for brain research (for example, in the case of a possible brain tumor). With that technique, you lie in a long (noisy) “tunnel” that combines magnetic rays and radio waves to register the brain.
