Most cyclists want the IJ bridges a bit more central

The committee that, under the leadership of the Belgian Alexander d’Hooge, had to provide advice on the connections across the IJ is ready. Two new bridges should be built, but they will not be located very close to Central Station.

This is mainly because shipping is then in a pinch. A bridge near Central was actually very unlikely from day one because of the scarcity of space, but a bridge from Java island to North is also not a good option, according to the committee.

That is why we opted for advice on a kind of large bicycle ring through the city. From West to North there will be a bridge from the Haparandadam to the NDSM wharf. And from East to North one from Czaar Peterstraat, via Azartplein on the KNSM island to Johan van Hasseltweg. These two bridges can be built so high that container ships can also pass through. And cyclists can cycle over the ring without too many obstacles.-

The reactions of cyclists vary a lot. But on the west side of the city, people seem a bit more enthusiastic. At least almost all the people we spoke to are not against it. We even come across an outspoken enthusiast on the Haparandadam.

The cyclists are certainly not anti-bridge at the NDSM shipyard, but most would rather cycle to the Pontsteiger. The Committee considers this to be unfeasible because shipping traffic will then be squeezed.

“A bridge here?” They blow off … It doesn’t make any sense at all ‘

On the banks where, according to the committee, the Eastern Bridge should rise, the joy is less. Cyclists point to the wind that will whip them on such a high bridge. And they find the advice to build a bridge precisely where the IJ is so wide. Finally, most cyclists also attach to their ferry (and that will disappear in this place).

The committee not only wants new bridges, but also wants the existing Amsterdam bridge to be widened and made suitable for public transport. The Passengers Terminal, where the large cruise ships are now docking, will have to be moved to a location west of the Haparandadam. Where the bridges go, the ferries disappear, but they could return to other places. The city council says it will carefully study the final advice.
