The registrations for Tesla and the other car manufacturers in Germany are still pending in March, but the Federal Office for Export Control (BAFA) has now published the first interesting figures for electric cars and hybrids. Accordingly, the electric purchase premium increased to 6,000 euros in February for no car – not even for a hybrid – was made more often than for the Tesla Model 3. And because Bafa now prescribes that the premium application is only made after purchase and approval, (almost) all of these cars have already been registered.
Bonus also for Model 3 Performance
According to the figures for the application status at the end of March, a total of around 10,500 applications for the electric car premium for various variants of the Tesla Model 3 have been received. At the end of February there were around 9,000 applications, so that in March 2020 around 1,500 copies of the smallest Tesla in Germany were funded. As the Bafa list shows, there are many performance models among them. Their price is actually above the net funding limit of 40,000 euros for pure electric cars, but because Tesla identifies it as the basic version plus performance extras, they also receive the bonus.
A total of over 5,400 applications for electric car and hybrid funding were submitted in March. With VW, there was a brand for which more premium applications were received than for Tesla. There were around 1,700 here – but, unlike Tesla, they are divided into two variants of the e-Golf (around 800 applications in March), the e-up (around 600 applications) and hybrids.
BMW and Renault behind Tesla
Even BMW with the widespread i3 and Renault with the inexpensive electric car Zoe, Tesla’s Model 3 could not keep up with the Bafa funding in March. BMW registered only around 1,100 new applications for Bafa, including many hybrids; There were almost as many applications for Renault (1461) as for the Tesla Model 3, but they were distributed among Zoe, Kangoo and Master.
According to the funding figures for Tesla, it can be expected that roughly the same number of vehicles from the US manufacturer were registered in Germany in March; Model S and Model X are not eligible and will be added. Despite corona virus problems, this would have resulted in a strong increase in the last month of the quarter: in January 2020, the Tesla registrations were 1052, in February 685 copies.
