Forbach remains at the foot of the podium of the towns of Moselle. The fourth city of the department has 21,887 inhabitants to date. The sub-prefecture of Moselle-Est is stolen the third place by a hair by Montigny-lès-Metz (22,236 souls). Logically, Metz (120 335) and Thionville (41 534) are far ahead. Forbach is nevertheless widening the gap with the other towns of Moselle-Est, which have all lost inhabitants over the past seven years. Sarreguemines and Saint-Avold respectively lost around 900 and 700 inhabitants. Sarreguemines has a total population of 21,105 inhabitants and Saint-Avold of 15,767. There were 23,281 Forbachois in 1999. To find the record of inhabitants in Forbach, we have to go back to 1982 with 27,187 inhabitants at the time.
In the agglomeration of Forbach, we note that Stiring-Wendel remains above 10,000 souls: 11,304. Behren-lès-Forbach has 6,627 inhabitants. Petite-Rosselle: 6,396. In the canton of Freyming-Merlebach: Freyming-Merlebach has 12,845 inhabitants (13,528 in 2013), Hombourg-Haut 6,344 and Farébersviller 5,549.
