The figures are provided by the French Chess Federation: in 2018, 54,860 licenses were issued, of which 20.22% were for women. The latter then represented 9.83% of chess club presidents, 24.74% of licenses issued to 5-14 year olds, 16.6% of licenses issued to 15-24 year olds, 8.99% of trainers FFE graduates and 8.52% of federal referees. “It’s not enough,” said François Ortega, president of the Chess Circle of Thionville, elected last September. To encourage women to take up the discipline, the club is organizing a 100% women’s team tournament this Sunday, February 26.
How many women practice within the Circle?
François ORTEGA “We have 130 members, half adults, half young people. But we only have 15% women. We really want to emphasize the feminization of chess. We have therefore hired initiation courses reserved for ladies, and today it is a question of encouraging them to take part in competitions. Hence the organization, this Sunday, of a women’s National 2 tournament. »
How many are participating in this tournament?
“About thirty in total, from the clubs of Thionville, Garche, Nancy, Vandoeuvre, Metz… This tournament is a qualifier for the Grand-Est championship which is a qualifier for the National 1 women’s race. »
The Chess Club of Thionville is a hundred years old. What will be the milestones of this anniversary?
“Thionville is one of the first clubs in the region, it was certainly founded in 1921 and joined the Eastern Chess Federation to participate in competitions. With the Covid crisis, we couldn’t put together a great birthday. We are working on the organization of the Chess Festival, over three days, in Thionville, the next Pentecost weekend. »
