Moselle. French capital of culture: Metz is selected

Metz has just successfully passed the first stage of selection for the “French Capital of Culture” label. A label created to reward the cultural project of a municipality or a group of municipalities with 20,000 to 200,000 inhabitants.

Of the twenty-nine candidates who participated in this first edition, nine were selected on Monday February 8 by a jury composed of seven personalities appointed by the Minister of Culture and chaired by Bernard Faivre d’Arcier, the former president of Metz in Scenes.

The name of the winner will be known at the end of March

In addition to Metz’s candidacy, the jury chose two local authorities – the Grand’Angoulême Agglomeration Community and the Val Briard Community of Communes – as well as six other cities including Brest, Laval, Le Mans, Saint-Paul de La Réunion , Sète and Villeurbanne.

A second selection phase is planned before March 15, which will include auditions and a questionnaire to be completed online on the dedicated site Capitale-culture.fr. The name of the winner will be announced by the Minister of Culture, Roselyne Bachelot, the last week of March for a first edition of this label scheduled for 1is as of December 31, 2022.

Far from being only honorary, this label promises its lucky winner to obtain an envelope of one million euros which will be financed equally by the Ministry of Culture and the Caisse des Dépôts.
