The thesis is both simple and relentless: social networks form an additional layer of what Guy Debord had designated in his time under the title “The society of the spectacle”. In other words, “one more tool at the service of the dominant ideology in the Marxist sense of the term”, specifies Bertrand Mertz. This is one of the reasons why the latter, lawyer and former socialist mayor of Thionville, chose to give his text, “Social networks against democracy” (Edilivre), the form of a palimpsest. However, the author denies having wanted to “climb on the shoulders” of Guy Debord: “Rather than pastiching, it simply seemed more honest to me to adopt this form” ….
