Moscow deliberately distracted from the ceremony of farewell to the leader of “Wagner”.
Even after the death of the leader of the Wagner Evgenia Prigozhina the Kremlin is concerned about the supporters of PMCs and the attractiveness of their leader. That is why Moscow tried to divert attention from the funeral of the main “Wagnerite”.
This is stated in report analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
“The Kremlin has made several efforts to hush up or mislead reports of the funeral of Wagner PMC financier Yevgeny Prigozhin. This likely indicates that the Kremlin remains preoccupied with Prigozhin’s attractiveness in Russia and among PMC forces even after his death,” the message says.
In particular, The Moscow Times reported, citing Russian officials, that the administration of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and the Federal Security Service deliberately classified Prigozhin’s funeral in order not to turn him into a martyr in the future. Moreover, a plan was even developed that would prevent any chance of public outrage or protest and misleading the public about the place of burial of the head of the PMC.
ISW also notes that some Russian Telegram channels noted that the Russian federal “media” mostly ignored Prigozhin’s funeral. This is likely also part of the Kremlin’s planned approach to repel the ceremony.
In addition, analysts drew attention to cases where some Russian Telegram channels unreasonably assumed that the leader of the Wagner had survived the plane crash. ISW believes that it could also be part of an information operation aimed at filling the Russian media space with false reports in order to divert attention from Prigozhin’s funeral.
Prigogine’s funeral
Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigogine was secretly buried in St. Petersburg August 29 at the Porokhov cemetery. Farewell passed in a closed format.
The Kremlin decided that Russian President-dictator Vladimir Putin will not come to Prigozhin’s funeral. The administration also noted that the decision in what format the farewell will take depends on his relatives.
