This was stated by the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, in response to a question regarding the criticism that appeared in the Bulgarian media regarding the speech of Russian President Vladimir Putin during his meeting with Macedonian President Gheorghe Ivanov in Moscow.
“I am convinced that such a bright holiday as the day of Slavic writing on May 24 should help to bring together our peoples who honor Cyril and Methodius, and not become the cause of disputes and conflicts, should not be occasions for artificial incitement of passions. This is an artificially fomented scandal, which, if “correctly” handled, can introduce elements of tension into Russian-Bulgarian relations, which, I hope, will not come to that,” Zakharova said.
The reason for the spokeswoman’s comment is Putin’s statement that the Slavic script came from the Macedonian territories, referring to the historical-geographical region of the same name.
“During the stay in Russia of the Macedonian President Gheorghe Ivanov, on the occasion of participation in a ceremony for the presentation of the prize awarded to him by the International Public Fund for the Unity of the Orthodox Peoples, speeches were heard on the subject in question. “No one in Russia – and I don’t know what is being said in other countries – has tried to deny the contribution of the First Bulgarian Kingdom to the creation of the Slavic script, this would contradict the historical facts,” she said.
According to her, in this case it is about the Macedonian lands as a geographical concept. “Back in the days of the Roman Empire, the region where Saints Cyril and Methodius were later born and worked was called Macedonia,” she added.
According to Zakharova, it is possible that the words of the head of state were interpreted or translated incorrectly, stressing that, according to Moscow, emphasis should be placed on discussing issues of bilateral cooperation, and not looking for opportunities for confrontation where there are none. /TASS
