Russian Senator Alexei Pushkov has threatened Moldova’s pro-European president, Maya Sandu, that her country could end up in a “historic dump.”
“She should be more careful about Russia and its symbols, especially since Chisinau cannot pay for Russian gas,” Pushkov wrote on the social network Telegram.
Moldova wants to join the European Union (EU) and has provided humanitarian aid to Ukraine, but not the military.
Regarding the war in Ukraine, Moldova has stated that it remains neutral and has not joined Western sanctions against Russia.
However, Moldova this week banned the use at public events of the so-called Georg ribbons and the capital letters “Z” and “V” used by Russian troops to denote their military equipment in Ukraine, which have become symbols of Russian imperialism.
Sandu justified the ban by stating that these symbols divide society.
Their place is in a historical landfill, Sandu said.
Moldova is heavily dependent on Russian natural gas supplies, but its Transnistrian region, home to 1,500 Russian troops, is effectively under Moscow’s control.
