MOSCOW (dpa-AFX) – In view of the rising number of corona infections, Russia’s capital Moscow obliges a number of companies to have at least 60 percent of their employees vaccinated. This vaccination quota should be fulfilled by mid-August in retail, gastronomy, as well as in the educational, cultural and sports sectors, according to an order from Moscow’s chief medical officer, Jelena Andrejewa. The new regulation also applies to state and municipal institutions.
Even around six months after the start of mass vaccinations, many people still hesitate to get immunized with one of the Russian preparations. According to Moscow’s mayor Sergej Sobyanin, only 1.8 million people in his city have been vaccinated against Corona so far – this corresponds to about 15 percent of the population in the metropolis with twelve million inhabitants. Russia-wide compulsory vaccinations are not planned, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov of the state agency Ria Novosti.
The number of new infections in Moscow has recently risen massively. On Wednesday, the authorities registered more than 5,700 new cases within 24 hours. Mayor Sobyanin called the development “dramatic”. In response, he had already arranged days off until next Sunday. During the same period, public playgrounds will also remain closed, as will restaurants and clubs between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m./haw/DP/jha
