Russia has justified the war with claims that the regime in Kyiv are Nazis. This is not true, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky himself has a Jewish background. Opinion polls show that right-wing extremist parties receive little support in Ukraine.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at the weekend that Adolf Hitler also had a Jewish background. It was meant to explain how Zelensky’s regime could be Nazis.
The statements made Israel react. Foreign Minister Yair Lapid, who, like many Israelis, is from a family hit hard by the Holocaust, said the statements were unforgivable and inaccurate. Now Moscow is answering.
“We have taken note of Foreign Minister Yair Lapid’s anti-historic statements, which largely explain why the authorities have decided to support the neo – Nazi regime in Kyiv,” Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement.
“Unfortunately, history has tragic examples of cooperation between Jews and Nazis,” the ministry writes.
