Mosbach: Commemoration on the market square – Mosbach

Dark hours: In November 1938 the synagogue in Mosbach was destroyed and cultural objects burned on the market square. Also this year the events of the pogrom night are commemorated.

Mosbach. (schat / stm) It is an image that has gained notoriety. Even in the documentation center “Topography of Terror”, which is one of the most visited places of remembrance in Berlin with more than one million visitors a year, the photographically captured scenery of the Mosbach market square, where books and cultural objects go up in flames, can be seen. It is the symbolic image for the events of the Reichspogromnacht, during which the destruction of the synagogue in Mosbach was followed by the burnings on the market square.

In Mosbach, the 9th of November is used year after year to keep alive the admonishing memory of the events in autumn 1938 (and the terrible time afterwards). This year the commemoration of the Reichspogromnacht will take place on the nationwide memorial day, Tuesday, November 9th on the market square. The memorial ceremony is organized by the history and museum association, the concentration camp memorial and the adult education center.

“Because anti-Semitism and conspiracy myths have now returned to the center of society, Jewish citizens in Germany often no longer feel safe. For example, Jews are being held responsible for the pandemic. Assaults, attacks and insults are increasing,” quoted Mosbach’s mayor Michael Jann at the latest municipal council meeting from the memorial announcement. This time, the anti-Semitism commissioner of the state of Baden-Württemberg, Michael Blume, was able to be won as a speaker.

“In order to make a commitment against racism, it would be important that as many members of the community council as possible take part,” said Jann. Due to the pandemic, the celebration begins at 6 p.m. on the market – instead of the usual place on Synagogenplatz, it should be easier to comply with distance rules. There is still a mask requirement, and the 3G rules also apply.
