SMEs are among the pillars of Swiss politics. The abbreviation stands for “small and medium-sized enterprises”. According to the Federal Statistical Office, there were 2019 around 600,000 free market companies in Switzerland; of these, 99.7 percent were SMEs (less than 250 employees). Over 60 percent of all employees work for SMEs.
