Mortality with diagnosed Covid-19 in Latvia has continued to decline over the past week, but is still almost twice the average mortality rate in the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA), according to data compiled by the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC).

ECDC estimates of the situation over the past two weeks, from 29 November to 12 December, show that the mortality rate from diagnosed Covid-19 in Latvia has fallen to 104.8 cases per million population and that Latvia has fallen from sixth to tenth place in the EU-30. / Among the EEA countries with the highest mortality. The highest mortality rates are recorded in Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia and Slovakia, where the number of deaths exceeds 200 per million inhabitants.
The average mortality rate with Covid-19 diagnosed in the EU and EEA at that time was 58.8 cases per million population.
Of Latvia’s neighbors, mortality in Estonia in the previous two weeks was 55.7 cases per million population and Estonia ranks 15th among EU / EEA countries. In Lithuania, on the other hand, the number of deaths is 101.6 per million population and it is currently ranked 11th among EU / EEA countries in terms of mortality from diagnosed with Covid-19.
At the same time, for the third week in a row, the level of infection with Covid-19 in Latvia is lower than the EU / EEA average.
In Latvia, the cumulative morbidity per 100,000 population has decreased to 499.6 cases from 29 November to 12 December, but in the EU / EEA countries it is 783.7 cases on average.
Latvia is currently in the 20th to 22nd place among 30 EU / EEA countries in terms of the incidence of Covid-19.
The situation is similar in the other Baltic countries, as the incidence rate in Lithuania in the previous two weeks was 845.8 cases per 100,000 population, while in Estonia it was 506.9 cases. Lithuania has fallen from 13th to 16th place in terms of morbidity, while Estonia has remained 21st among EU / EEA countries.
The highest incidence in the EU / EEA in the last two weeks has been in Liechtenstein, with 2167.9 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 population. The threshold of 1,500 cases is also exceeded in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Latvia has also managed to reduce the number of cases among seniors. In the last two weeks in Latvia, the infection rate among the population aged 65 and over was 269 cases per 100,000 population, and we have dropped from the 17th to the 21st place among the EU / EEA countries in this indicator. The EU / EEA average is 398 cases per 100,000 population.
