The amazing

history of T. D.,

which proves

the saying that

there is no grave,

but the prison has

The story of 66-year-old T.D. is a true confirmation of the proverb that the grave has no door, but the prison has. He was released this summer by a decision of the Stara Zagora District Court after spending 30 years and 8 months behind bars for a double murder committed in 1990 in the then village of Kran, Kazanlak region. In the beginning, the saga is even romantic. TD was convicted of financial fraud at sea and while in prison, according to socialist rules, he exchanged letters with a female prisoner from Sliven prison. Then he fell in love with her and as soon as he was released, he looked for the woman for a closer relationship. However, she did not like him and refused him. He decided to kill her. Unfortunately, an involuntary witness to the murder became a neighbor of the victim, who came to buy milk from her. The man removed her so as not to betray him, then left

the crime scene

So they arrested him while he was sleeping. Later, the story unfolded as in Vaptsarov’s popular poem, which says that in court they do not pat on the shoulder, but sentence to death. Such a fate befell the double murderer from Kran, but until the heaviest sentence was reached, a moratorium on executions was introduced in our country in July 1990. A few years later, the death penalty was abolished altogether, and convicts received life imprisonment without parole. However, T. was lucky, after 15 years in prison and good behavior, the then Vice President Margarita Popova pardoned him. Thus, his sentence became life imprisonment, but with the right to parole. According to the law, this sentence can be changed and the convict can be released if he has spent at least 30 years behind bars. T.D. he was imprisoned in both Burgas and Stara Zagora. He made three attempts to be released, the third was successful. Prison authorities say he was a good example of how one can recover. The former prisoner currently lives with his brother in Burgas and has started working. He still doesn’t dare to come out because he was worried about how people around him would accept him.
