Now on to the next party, because Mortal Kombat will be celebrating its 30th anniversary next year! However, work on the first MK started a year earlier, so Ed Boon, one of the franchise’s two daddies, has already started celebrating the anniversary by sharing a really cool video of some motion capture footage used in Mortal Kombat.
In the video you can see how Ed Boon suddenly thought during the recordings for the Scorpion character how cool it would be if the Ninja could throw a rope or spear at his opponents. Indeed, the legendary Scorpion move with the even more legendary statement: “Get over here!”
Nice detail is that John Tobias, MK’s other dad, wasn’t a big fan of this idea at the beginning, but he quickly changed his mind when he saw Scorpion’s spear in the game. Via Twitter he said:

“Funny story… Ed Boon and I wanted to theme the ‘ninjas’ with fire and ice to differentiate them. So, when Ed had the idea for the rope/spear silly me wasn’t crazy about it because it wasn’t ‘fire’ themed. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Changed my mind pretty quick once we had it working in the game.”
Check the moment in the video below, as a fan these kinds of videos are a feast!
