Since the beginning of the Mortal Kombat series, a total of 73 million copies have been sold. In doing so, the series allows competitors such as Tekken, Smash Bros. and Street Fighter behind him. The numbers have risen sharply thanks to the recent titles Mortal Kombat X and 11.
Warner Bros. Games mentions the total number of 73 million copies in a press release highlighting Mortal Kombat 11 sales figures. Of that game that appeared in 2019, more than twelve million copies have now been sold.
Analyst Daniel Ahmad compares the numbers with other famous fighting games. Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. stands at 65.1 million copies sold, Tekken is number three with 51 million copies and Street Fighter is at 46 million copies.
The first Mortal Kombat game appeared in 1992, making it not the oldest series of fighting games. The first Street Fighter game was released in 1987. The first Tekken came out in late 1994 and Super Smash Bros. has been in existence since 1999.
According to Ahmad, Mortal Kombat series has reached the top position thanks to Mortal Kombat X and 11. Also of the tenth part, more than ten million copies have been sold. In October last year the counter for MK 11 was still at more than eight million copies. After that, an improved version was released for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.
