Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Johnny Cage are returning in a new bloody fighting game.
A few years ago, developers NetherRealm Studios revived the incredibly violent and controversial fighting game series “Mortal Kombat”with great success.
The last game released in the series was “Mortal Kombat 11” from 2019, but now it seems that a sequel is in the works.
The announcement of “Mortal Kombat 12” is not particularly spectacular, as it was confirmed during an investor call with Warner Bros. Discovery. During the meeting, the company’s CEO David Zaslav revealed that the game is in the works and that it will be released sometime in 2023.
According to Zaslav, gaming is an important part of the company’s strategy for the coming year that differentiates them from other competing media companies.
“Mortal Kombat 11” was sold in over 12 million copies, so it’s no wonder that Warner Bros wants to bank on the brutal fighting game series. Classic movie characters such as the Terminator, Robocop and the Joker have also appeared in the game.
The “Mortal Kombat” series premiered over 30 years ago and is perhaps best known for its massively gory and grotesque finishing moves, as well as causing moral panic among scores of parents in the 90s. In the games, we see heroes like Liu Kang, Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage fight against the underworld ruler Shao Kahn and his henchmen.
2023 looks to be a really heavy year for the fighting game genre, with “Street Fighter 6” (June 2) and “Tekken 8” also launching during the year.
